I coach a sophomore girls basketball team ("c" team) and yesterday we had our first game. It was my first game coaching, and I was pumped up all day. Our school is the biggest in the area so consequently our "c" team plays a lot of other schools jv teams. The team we played wasn't that good but they were patient and worked to get good shots. They played a 2-3 zone against us the whole game, which we dismantled with a 3 out 2 in (hilo short corner) offense. The only problem was that none of our shots were going in!!! What can I do about that? We were getting great looks, but they were all shot extremely hard and sounded like they were gonna break the backboard. The halftime score was 11-10 us. I was pissed at halftime, but after reflection I feel dumb for being mad. I mean, it's not like we were purposefully missing shots. Anyways, we came out the second half, got out of our press (they were patient and breaking it) tightened up on defense , and ended up winning 42-23. We went 18 of 79 from the field!!! Anyways, Im still trying to find out my coaching style, I found that at times, I was trying to emulate other coaches rather than being myself, but sometimes its like you have to be a jerk, I dunno..........Im glad we won. Tonight we are going to play a much better team. Im nervous again.....I love this site. Oh yeah and I never proofread sorry.

Thanks for checking in.
The only thing I can add is that it was the first game of the season, so teams usually are a little unrefined at this stage of the season.
Sounds like you have your off/def systems down, and might just need to work on the little things in practice.

You seem like you have good discipline to be able to get easy shots and now you just need to work on shooting.
I usually do station work form shooting 3 days a week for 25 minutes, I have a station to work on FT shooting, off the dribble shooting, off the pass shooting, and a few other things and the kids hated it the first week.
...then they all started shooting well, and they are doing it at home after practice on days we don't do it in work out.
As far as being a jerk, I think you need to be a jerk a little bit but the kids need to trust you.

Clearly there's only one way to improve shooting- shoot the ball a lot. And ideally- game shots. from game spots, at game speed. Of course that's often difficult to get.
Our girls teams (I coach girls) from Jr High through HS have been known for lousy shooting for years. This season we dedicated 30 minutes out of EVERY 2 hour practice to just shooting. And it paid off big time. This season was the first time that a team I coached was able to get the opponent out of a sagging zone with good perimeter shooting.

Remember you can't just let them shoot at practice. You have to teach them how to shoot. If they are banging the ball hard off the board then they are shooting it to flat. When I started getting a higher arc on my shot it greatly improved. Look for videos by Ernie Hobbie "the shot doctor". He does a great job of showing step by step how to shoot a great shot. He did a one day clinic for our teams a couple years ago and it really helped. I also have a spare rim that I show my players so they can see just how big it is compared to a ball and emphasis getting the ball to go straight down into it by shooting a high arced shot.

Congrats on your first win. It's always a good feeling. You made a great comment when you said "it wasn't like they were trying to miss shots." My first year head coaching was as a varsity coach and if I could change one thing about my first year it would be to shoot more in practice. I think many first year coaches, including myself, get so caught up in having great b.o.b plays, press breakers, structured offensive sets and plays that they forget about the most fundamental part: putting the ball in the basket. Make sure all your drills include some type of shooting (yes even defensive drills) and as an earlier post said, teach them properly how to shoot first. Who cares if you have a great offense if your players can't score. Good luck. www.beantownhoops.com
